TUSCALOOSA | Seniors Rakee Anderson and LaJay Sears made sure that the Stillman College men's basketball team started the new year with a win.

Anderson and Sears combined for 50 points on Tuesday, and the Tigers defeated the LeMoyne-Owen Magicians 98-81. Anderson, a point guard, had 29 points. Sears, a guard and forward, scored 21.

The Tigers, who led 39-31 at halftime, shot 64.3 percent (9-for-14) on 3-point tries in the second half. Stillman went 6-for-22 on 3-pointers in the first half.

“I told them that if guys are giving you wide-open 3's and it's within the offense we need to take them,” said Stillman coach Michael Grant.

“Eventually, if we take enough of them some of them are going fall. It kind of opened up the ballgame for us. I said I don't care if we end up shooting 50 3's. If they keep giving it to you and you're wide open, you're college basketball players. Put them up and score it.”

Guard Lee Riley, who made four 3-pointers, added 16 points for Stillman, 5-3 overall and 4-3 in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Center Kevin Johnson went 4-for-4 from the field and scored eight points. Damian Ford came off the bench and made a couple of 3-pointers to finish with eight points.

Jeremy Allen, who scored seven points, led the Tigers with nine rebounds. Anderson and Riley had six rebounds each.

Stillman was playing its first game since a 74-71 home loss to Benedict on Dec. 11. Anderson went 0-for-9 from the field, while Sears went 3-for-12.
