Retired Faculty Donates Gifts

  • 6-9-2010

Dr. Ruby L. Perkins donated many diverse artifacts, art objects and collectibles from a variety of cultures to Stillman College upon her retirement. Among the many items donated were: a victrola, 2 original paintings, prints of antique photographs featuring African Americans in period clothing, 2 European sunburst mirrors, African, Hispanic and Asian artifacts, Mexican hand-blown glass, 2 First Edition books along with other rare books, and music from Dinah Washington, Asian artists and a Russian ballet.

Many of the donated items are currently displayed in the Wynn Fine Arts Center. The items will be featured from May 25- August 25 in the showcase on the first floor of the Wynn Fine Arts Center.

Dr. Perkins is known for her elaborate displays on Stillman campus. Decorating the halls of the Wynn Fine Arts Center with theme-oriented designs was not required of her, but she did it of her own volition to add to the enjoyment and enrichment of the Stillman students, faculty, administration and staff. Her final display is entitled “In Gratitude: A Farewell Display.”

When asked why she donated the items to Stillman, she said that she was motivated to donate to Stillman to add to the College’s assets in a meaningful way. “It’s what needs to be done. You see a need and you fill it,” said Perkins. “When you share with others,” she continued, “it comes back to you in one way or another. It is how I was raised, and as a Christian, it is what you are supposed to do; Share with others.”
