Davenport to Perform from Latest Book of Poetry

Dr. Doris Davenport, associate professor of English at Stillman, will perform poetry from her eighth book of poetry, “ascent” on Tuesday, April 17 from 6:30-7:45 p.m. in the Wynn Center. A booksigning reception and question and answer period will follow the performance. Attendees will have an opportunity to purchase a copy of “ascent” at the reception.
Davenport is a writer, educator, and literary & performance poet who grew up in the Appalachian foothills of Habersham County (Cornelia) Georgia. She has earned degrees from Paine College (B.A. English), SUNY Buffalo (M.A. English) and the University of Southern California (Ph.D. Literature). davenport has been a writer since about age eleven and the first book she recalls reading and loving - at age 6 - was Alice in Wonderland. davenport has done more than 200 poetry performances and workshops and taught at schools from Los Angeles to New Haven, CT.
From Aug. 2007 - May 2011, she coordinated the Annual Poetry Festival, at Albany State University (Albany, GA). In June 2011, she did a collaborative performance (“Conversations With Time”) at ROOTSfest in Baltimore, MD (alternateroots.org). In August she returned to teach at Stillman in as Associate Professor of English. Here, in September 2012, she helped to coordinate an open mic for the international event, “100,000 Poets & Artists for Change.” In October she was one of the invited authors to participate in the 13th Annual Georgia Literary Festival in Sautee-Nacoochee, Georgia. davenport has published book reviews, articles, essays, and books of poetry. ascent is her eighth book of poetry.
