MLK Distinguished Lecture Series to Host Dr. Gina Athena Ulysse March 1

  • 2-28-2012

The Martin Luther King Distinguished Lecture Series will host Dr. Gina Athena Ulysse on Thursday, March 1, 2012 at 7 p.m. in Stinson Auditorium on the Stillman College campus. Dr. Ulysse will present her lecture, “Because When God is Too Busy: Haiti, Me, and the World.” This lecture is free and open to the public.

How did Haiti – the enfant terrible of the Americas – become the bête noire of the region? This dramatic monologue considers the ways the past occupies the present. Ulysse weaves history, personal narrative, theory and statistics in spoken word with Vodou chants to reflect and deconstruct childhood memories, social (in)justice, spirituality and the incessant dehumanization of Haitians. She also offers critical musings on geopolitics along with dispatches from individuals in post-quake Haiti.

The Martin Luther King Distinguished Lecture Series seeks to bring to institutions in the Tuscaloosa Consortium for Higher Education (TCHE) and the Tuscaloosa community speakers who embody the ideals enunciated by the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
