Stillman Awards Over 30 Scholarships at Annual Convocation

Stillman issued more than 30 scholarships and awards at its annual awards convocation on Thursday, April 12, at 11 a.m., in Birthright Auditorium. Scholarships and awards were given as follows:
The recipient of the Sarah S. Davis Endowed Scholarship is Erica Watts, a senior, with a cumulative grade point average of 3.95. The Stillman College Board of Trustees in honor and appreciation of Mrs. Sarah Striggles Davis’ contribution to the good of the College established this scholarship in 1996, and is awarded to women students who show excellence in scholarship and commitment to service.
The recipient of the Helene W. Hibbard Endowed Scholarship Fund is Brionna McMeans, a freshman, with a cumulative grade point average of 4.00. Gulf States Paper Corporation gives this scholarship in honor of Mrs. Helene Warner Hibbard, a long time Stillman trustee, and former chairperson of the Board of Trustees. The purpose of the scholarship is to promote the education of a full-time enrolled student at the College.
The recipients of the George A. LeMaistre Endowed Scholarship are: David Torres, a sophomore, with a cumulative grade point average of 3.65; and Chatney Williams, a junior with a cumulative grade point average of 3.50. The scholarship was established in 1983, and is jointly awarded by the First Presbyterian Church of Tuscaloosa and Stillman College to a rising junior or senior who exhibits good citizenship, high cumulative grade point average, enrolled in a business or pre-law curriculum, Christian background, and evidence of leadership and commitment to service.
The recipients of the Fred L. May Fellowship Endowed Scholarship are: Lawrence Brown, a sophomore, with a 3.93 cumulative grade point average; Jasmine McElwee-Malone, a sophomore, with a 3.90 cumulative grade point average; Erik Schmich, a junior with a 4.00 cumulative grade point average; and Shalyn Smith, a junior, with a 4.00 cumulative grade point average. This scholarship was established to award deserving students in the Harte Honors College.
The recipient of the Armond Thomas, Sr. Endowed Scholarship is Raneisha Johnson, a senior, with a 3.76 cumulative grade point average. The Thomas family in memory of Armond Thomas, Sr., a strong supporter of Stillman College established the scholarship. It is the desire of Dr. and Mrs. Eddie B. Thomas and his family, that the scholarship be awarded to a student majoring in elementary education, having completed the freshman year with a minimum 2.5 cumulative grade point average, be enrolled full-time at Stillman, and one who exemplifies good character.
The recipients of the Eugene and Amanda Webb Scholarship are Adrian Bryant, a senior, with a 3.73 cumulative grade point average; and Ashley Jennings, a junior with a 3.69 cumulative grade point average. Dr. Webb, a former trustee, and successful entrepreneur in New York City with interest in real estate, banking and investments, and his wife, established the scholarship to be presented to the two top business majors at the College.
The recipient of the Edwards Science Endowed Scholarship is Monae McBride, a freshman, with a 4.00 cumulative grade point average. Dr. Horace B. Edwards, former trustee, and Mrs. Fran M. Edwards of Topeka, Kansas established the scholarship in October 2000. Dr. Edwards is the brother of the former registrar at Stillman, Mrs. Evelyn Nalls, and Mrs. Myrtle Gray, a Stillman alumnus.
The recipient of the Terrell and Unareed Harris Endowed Scholarship is Shayla Pryer, a senior, with a 3.66 cumulative grade point average. Dr. Trudier Harris, class of 1969, and her brother Peter Harris, established the scholarship in 1992, in memory of their parents and is awarded to a student majoring in English or Business Administration who demonstrates leadership on and off campus.
The recipients of the William Randolph Hearst Endowed Scholarship are: Anthony Heaven, a senior, with a 3.93 cumulative grade point average; and LaPortia Pierce, a senior, with a 3.82 cumulative grade point average. The scholarship was established in 2002 for students in the Harte Honors College who intend to permanently reside in the United States after completion of their studies.
The recipients of the Cordell and Marie Wynn Fellowship are: Asia Hart, a freshman, with a 4.00 cumulative grade point average; Lindsey Payne, a freshman with a 3.90 cumulative grade point average; Taylor Street, a freshman with a 4.00 cumulative grade point average; and Jamila McKinnis, a senior, with a 4.00 cumulative grade point average. The Wynn Fellow was established in 1986 in honor of President Emeritus, Dr. Cordell Wynn, and his wife Mrs. Marie Wynn. Fellows must possess good character, leadership traits and evidence of scholarship and servant hood.
The recipient of the Francis D. Stillman Leadership Scholarship is Raechele Butler, a freshman with a 4.00 cumulative grade point average. Francis D. Stillman established the scholarship in memory of Dr. Charles Allen Stillman, and is awarded to a deserving student who has demonstrated leadership in his/her service to the Stillman College community and/or leadership in service to their home community.
The recipient of the Betty and Coy Williamson Endowed Scholarship is Josiah Yance, a junior with a 3.84 cumulative grade point average. Betty and Coy Williamson are Stillman alumni; Mr. Williamson is deceased, and Mrs. Williamson currently serves on the Board of Trustees. The scholarship is to be awarded to a deserving student in the Business Department.
The recipient of the Alabama Power Foundation Endowed Scholarship is Brittany Sutton, a freshman with a 3.64 cumulative grade point average. The scholarship was established in 1989 to promote the education of a deserving full-time student concentrating their studies in a business related area.
The recipient of the Claudia D. Williamson Hill Endowed Scholarship is Melicia Cook, a freshman with a 3.72 cumulative grade point average. The scholarship was established in 1995 in memory of Mrs. Hill, with income from the endowment being used to support an African American student from Georgia.
The recipient of the Louise Hicks McCoy Endowed Scholarship is Ebony Lollis, a senior with a 3.91 cumulative grade point average. The scholarship was established in 1996 in memory of Mrs. McCoy, a Stillman alumna. It is awarded to a rising junior or senior who has shown great improvement during their matriculation at Stillman.
The recipient of the Reese Phifer Jr. Memorial Scholarship is Emily Berryman, a sophomore with a 3.65 cumulative grade point average. The scholarship was endowed by the Phifer Wire Company in 1988, and is awarded to an outstanding student from Tuscaloosa.
The recipient of the George and Mattie Washington Endowed Scholarship is Jasmine Stewart, a freshman with a 3.80 cumulative grade point average. Friends and family established the scholarship in 1996 with the stipulation that the recipient must reside in Tuscaloosa and is willing to become familiar with the work and contributions of the Washingtons.
The recipient of the W. James and Dr. Willa G. Lowe Endowed Scholarship Fund is Maria Daniels, a senior with a 3.91 cumulative grade point average. Dr. Willa Lowe and family established the scholarship in 1998 in memory of Mr. Lowe who was strongly committed to education, community service, and civic responsibility. In addition to junior classification, the recipient must have a minimum “B” average, and preferably be a native of West Alabama, and must demonstrate a commitment to academic excellence and good citizenship.
The recipient of the Billy and Claudette Archibald Endowed Scholarship is Karen Salanguit, a freshman with a 4.00 cumulative grade point average. Colonel Dominic D. Archibald, class of 1985, established the scholarship in memory of her parents, both Stillman graduates. The award is given to a first year student who enrolls with a minimum grade point average but exemplifies the greatest potential to succeed, shows character traits of integrity, and perseverance.
The recipient of the Perry D. Peoples Jr. Business Endowed Scholarship is Michael Reynolds, a junior with a 3.86 cumulative grade point average. The scholarship was established to assist a student with a minimum 3.00 cumulative grade point average, evidence of good citizenship, leadership and commitment to service, interested in majoring in Business Administration, and/or pursuing a pre-law curriculum, and have junior or senior classification.
The recipient of the Bessie German Endowed Scholarship is Jessica Nathan, a junior with a 3.87 cumulative grade point average. Elizabeth Baptist Church established the scholarship in December 2001 in memory of the late Bessie J. German, former church musician, and former employee of Stillman College, to assist a student with a minimum grade point average of 2.7 or better, active in the church and community, and a rising junior.
The recipient of the Herman and Annie Lavender Smith Endowment is Brittany Poston, a senior with a 3.89 cumulative grade point average. The scholarship, was established as a leadership award in 1988 by Dr. Herman B. Smith and his wife, Mrs. Annie Lavender Smith, of Atlanta, Georgia in memory of her parents, George and Mattie Lavender.
The recipient of the Tuscaloosa Chapter of the Links, Inc. Endowed Scholarship is Hadassah Wooten, a senior with a 3.82 cumulative grade point average. The scholarship was established in 2007 as a merit or need based scholarship for undergraduate students enrolled at Stillman.
The recipient of the Mattie Thomas-Brackett and Rufus Brackett Scholarship is Johnny Pate Jr., a senior with a 3.89 cumulative grade point average. The scholarship was established in 2008 for a deserving and qualified student in need of financial aid.
The No Greater Calling Scholarship was awarded to Jeuelle Benjamin, a senior with a 3.63 cumulative grade point average. Benjamin is a native of Birmingham, Ala.
The Ila Newell Glynn Music Award was given to Princess Stewart, a senior with a 3.37 cumulative grade point average. Stewart is a native of Macon, Miss.
The Ann Huckabee Art Award was given to Terry Lewis, a senior with a 2.96 cumulative grade point average. Lewis is a native of Huntsville, Ala.
The Japheth Hall, Jr. Scholarship was awarded to Anthony Zermeno, a junior with a 3.07 cumulative grade point average. Zermeno is a native of Colton, Cali.
The Elbert Sparks, Jr. Scholarship was awarded to Asia Hart, a freshman with a 4.00 cumulative grade point average. Hart is a native of Dothan, Ala.
The Pearson/Dendy Scholarship sponsored by the Tuscaloosa Music Club was awarded to Joshua Chambers, a sophomore with a 2.62 cumulative grade point average. Chambers is a native of Madison, Ala.
The Campus Queens Association’s Helping Hand Scholarship was awarded to Angela Means, a junior from Eutaw, Ala., with a 2.79 cumulative grade point average; Shambria Davis, a freshman from Valley, Ala., with a 3.60 cumulative grade point average; and Jalin Smith, a sophomore from Huntsville, Ala., with a 2.97 cumulative grade point average.
The Driver-Storey Leadership Award was given to Adrian Bryant, a senior with a 3.73 cumulative grade point average. Byrant is a native of Orrville, AL.
