The highly-acclaimed Stillman College Concert Choir, under the direction of Dr. Phillip Todd Westgate, will kick-off the Black History Month Observance at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Titusville.

Slated to perform on Sunday, February 5 at 3p.m., the choir, which has a touring group of 30 singers, will include in its repertoire distinct areas of church music, including European offerings, spirituals, and gospel music. Some of the choir’s notable performances have included Haydn’s “Third Mass” (Lord Nelson) with the Johnson Symphony Orchestra and on WKKG television in Mobile, plus “Family Christmas with Stillman College” at Bellingrath Gardens; Mozart’s “Requiem” with the Tuscaloosa Symphony Orchestra, the Tuscaloosa’s Annual “Realizing the Dream” Concert, Alabama Governor’s Arts Awards Program, and at the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). Most recently, the choir participated in the celebration of “Heimattage” in Schorndorf, Germany, and performed “God Bless America” and other faith-inspired songs at the Tuscaloosa Amphitheatre during the city’s Remembrance Ceremony of September 11, 2001 and at the inauguration of Alabama’s 53rd governor, Dr. Robert Bentley. Ms. Layrne Williford serves as the choir’s accompanist.
 
The choir has performed with such notable artists as James Earl Jones, Ossie Davis, Roberta Flack, Maya Angelou, Harry Belafonte, Cicely Tyson, Sidney Poitier, Al Green, Della Reese, and Gunther Schuler. Dr. Ernest McNealey is president of Stillman College.
 
Two amazing, trailblazing  Birmingham women icons will also be featured in Westminster’s Black History observance. They include: Dr. Sandral Hullett, CEO of Cooper Green Mercy Hospital and nationally-acclaimed researcher and physician with numerous award-winning achievements in rural healthcare, who will speak at the 11a.m. worship service at Westminster on February 12; and Odessa Woolfolk, notable educator, civic activist, urban problem-solver, founding member of Leadership Birmingham, and founding Board Member/Director of Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, who will speak  at the 11a.m. service at Westminster on Sunday, February 26.
