The Sheppard Library seeks a person who has broad experience in performing the functions of technical and digitization services.Under the supervision of the Head Librarian, the Technical Services Librarian assists with the supervision of reference, circulation, reserves services and directs the technical functions of the library.
Knowledge and Skills1. Knowledge of familiarity with ongoing emerging information technology2. Ability to perform library automation troubleshooting.3. Ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively with faculty, staff, students and administration.4. Experience with OCLC, AACR2 and MARC formats5. Technical skills to manage digital resources, perform digital preservation and troubleshoot software and hardware.6. Knowledge of contemporary bibliographic maintenance standards and practices7. Technical knowledge of a variety of library related computer programs, and the Internet.8. Able to produce original cataloging in an automated library system.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Assists with the circulation, reference and reserves functions. Supervises patron services e.g., photocopy service, microfilm service, and the use of computers located in public services areas in the library. Supervises shelf maintenance for library resources. Generates computer reports pertaining to cataloging. Supervises the processing of materials for reserves. Submits reports to the Head Librarian covering operations in the public/technical services areas. Coordinates the acquisition of resources. Coordinates the preparation of incoming resources, with proper identification, e.g. ownership stamp, accession numbers, bar codes, security strips, date due slips, and labels. Formulates policy relating to e-book cataloging.
Assumes responsibility for organizing and providing access to the online catalog. Performs original and copy cataloging of non-print items, audiovisual materials, curriculum materials, and Internet resources. Revises electronic records as needed. Develops policies and procedures for cataloging a variety of formats according to AACR standards and Library of Congress protocols. Serves as the library’s official contact with OCLC (Online Computer Library Center) Edits, updates and maintains the catalog database. Assists with library automation system software upgrades. Provides information literacy instruction when needed. Discards out-of-date materials and adjusts appropriate records. Maintains inventory of resources. Participates in night and weekend duties. Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements include a MLS degree in Library/Information Science from an accreditedinstitution and experience of working in the areas of technical and digitization services inan academic library setting.
