Description

The School of Arts and Sciences serves the mission of the College via its central role in providing the instruction and the experiences that define a liberal arts education. Arts and Sciences consists of the Departments of English, Journalism, and Media Communications; Computational and Information Sciences; Natural Sciences; Psychology; Religion and Theology; and Social Sciences. Selected majors are offered in most of the areas. In addition, these units provide the interdisciplinary and introductory courses that make up the general education curriculum. Students majoring in the arts and sciences may pursue programs of study which prepare them for graduate school or for careers in areas specifically related to their areas of study.

Job Responsibilities

Job SummaryThe Department of English, Journalism, and Media Communications (EJMC) at Stillman College invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Professor position at any rank. Depending on qualifications, experience, and institutional needs, the successful candidate may also be considered for appointment as Chair of the Department of English, Journalism, and Media Communications. Successful applicants will have a Ph.D. degree in Journalism, Mass Communication, Information Science, or a related field with a record of research or professional practice and teachingexperience in broadcasting and journalism.Applicants must be able to teach with professional tools and demonstrate high-level proficiency and/or professional experience in some combination of the following areas: TV and radio broadcasting,journalism, reporting, media production, content creation, video editing, and publication design. Applicants must be able to teach writing for print, online, and broadcast platforms as well as video and audio production.● Writing courses may include (but are not limited to) Intro to Media Writing, Intro to MassCommunication, Newswriting and Reporting (including editing), and Feature Writing. Applicants must be able to teach desktop publishing and be proficient in Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, or comparable software.● Courses include News Media and Desktop Publishing.Applicants must be able to teach video and audio production courses with a focus on broadcast journalism and be proficient in Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro for Mac, or comparable software.● Courses include Digital Media Production and Radio Production.

Responsibilities of the successful applicant include, but are not limited to, the following:● Teaching journalism and media communication courses as needed by the Department.● Incorporating active student learning and appropriate technology use in the classroom.● Advising and mentoring student majors as they matriculate through the curriculum established by the Department of English, Journalism, and/or Media Communications.● Placing and supervising students in internships in associated fields.● Engaging in service activities relevant to the applicant’s field of study as well as to the mission of the department, the division, and the College.● Engaging in professional development activities such as grant writing, conference presentations, and workshops.● Candidates considered for appointment as Department Chair will be expected to provide academic and administrative leadership for the department, including faculty mentorship, scheduling, assessment oversight, curriculum development, and support for departmental initiatives.

Required Skills/Abilities● Knowledge of content area related to candidate’s field of study.● Knowledge of Learning Management System (LMS) use in and outside of the classroom.● Knowledge of pedagogical approaches to engaging with student population.● Knowledge of college policies and procedures.● Knowledge of faculty advising.● Ability to maintain student files pertaining to academic progress and matriculation.● Knowledge of technology pertaining to in-class, online, and virtual instruction.● Demonstrated understanding of traditional journalism and research practices.● Experience with TV broadcasting and/or media production.● Documented expertise in the manipulation of video, text, and imagery. 

Physical RequirementsSome physical effort required in the transportation of equipment. No or very limited exposure to physical risk. Work is normally performed in the office, classroom, and in the field.
