DESCRIPTION:Stillman College will welcome Dr. John Giggie\, Professor of History at The University of Alabama and Director of the Summersell Center for the Study of the South\, for a special presentation on Stillman College and the Civil Rights Movement in Tuscaloosa\, with a particular focus on the pivotal events of Bloody Tuesday in 1964.  \n\n\n\nThe presentation will take place on Tuesday\, September 30\, at 11:00 a.m. in the Stillman Art Gallery\, followed by a moderated question-and-answer session. The event will conclude at 11:50 a.m. Dr. Gordon Govens\, Associate Professor and Executive Director of Faith-Based and Social Justice Initiatives/Thriving Congregations Lilly Grant\, will serve as moderator.  \n\n\n\nThis program is free and open to the Stillman and Tuscaloosa communities. The Stillman Art Gallery is located directly behind the Hay Center\, accessible through the 36th Avenue gate.  \n\n\n\nAbout Dr. John Giggie  \n\n\n\nDr. Giggie is widely recognized for his scholarship on the history of the American South\, the Civil Rights Movement\, and religion. He is the author of Bloody Tuesday: The Untold Story of the Struggle for Civil Rights in Tuscaloosa\, which highlights the heroism of Stillman faculty\, staff\, and students\, including Mrs. Willie Wells and Ms. Dorothy Richardson. The book also acknowledges the contributions of Ms. Evelyn King\, who provided critical source material from Stillman’s Sheppard Library.  \n\n\n\nIn a recent article for Time magazine\, Dr. Giggie reflected on Bloody Tuesday’s legacy and described Stillman as “one of the jewels of Black higher education.” The article can be found here: How Tuscaloosa’s ‘Bloody Tuesday’ Changed the Course of History.  \n\n\n\nAlabama Speaks Series  \n\n\n\nDr. Giggie’s presentation is part of the Alabama Speaks lecture series\, commissioned by Dr. Yolanda W.
