Stillman College Announces its 2024 Commencement Exercises

Media personality Egypt Sherrod will receive an honorary degree at the 2024 commencement exercises.

The commencement exercises will include a keynote address from Ms. Egypt Sherrod, host and executive producer of HGTV’s hit show “Married To Real Estate,” where she has demonstrated a remarkable commitment to sharing her skills and expertise with others. Her successful business ventures and dedication to service make her a deserving recipient of this prestigious honor.

In addition to Ms. Sherrod, Stillman College will confer honorary degrees upon Commissioner Lashunda Roberts Scales, the first woman to hold the District 1 seat in the Jefferson County Commission, and Dr. Donald W. Comer, the retiring Chairman of the Board of Trustees, for their exemplary dedication to public service and higher education.

Comer for their outstanding contributions to their respective fields and their unwavering commitment to serving others,” said Dr. Yolanda W. Page, President of Stillman College. “Their dedication and leadership inspire us all, and we are privileged to celebrate their achievements at our upcoming Commencement ceremony.”

The 2024 Commencement ceremony will take place on May 11, 2024, at 9:00 am, at Stillman’s Tiger Stadium.

Dr. Donald W. Comer

Donald Comer is a seasoned Fortune 50 Senior Executive known for his ability to drive innovation. He currently serves as Vice President, Decision Science & Analytics with FedEx Corporation. In this role, he leverages data analytics, artificial intelligence, and machine learning techniques to solve complex business problems, exploit credible options for innovation, drive operational change, and create incremental business value.

He is a two-time recipient of the FedEx Five Star, awarded to the top 2% of employees annually.

Prior to FedEx, Donald was with International Paper, Holiday Corporation, and Brandon, Smith & Jones CPA in accounting, finance, and audit roles.

Donald has a Ph.D. in Urban Higher Education from Jackson State University, an MBA from the University of Memphis, and a BS in Accounting from the University of Tennessee.

Donald’s belief in advancement through education has led him to dedicate significant personal time to serving on the boards of two historic Black colleges. Donald serves Stillman College as Chairman of the Board of Trustees. He also serves as trustee and is currently board First Vice-President at LeMoyne-Owen College.

Donald is a 2024 recipient of the Henry Logan Starks Distinguished Service Award. This award from the Memphis Theological Seminary is given to an exceptional community leader who has rendered exceptional service, providing courageous leadership on behalf of the marginalized, impoverished, and underrepresented people in his/her community. He is a 2022 inductee into the Lane College Hall of Distinction, recognizing a non-alumnus who consistently demonstrates an enthusiastic commitment to the mission of the college, has excelled in his professional career and has a legacy of community service. Previously, he served the 14,000+ member National Black MBA
Association (NBMBAA) board from 2012 to 2021. Leadership roles included Board Chairman, Treasurer, member of the Executive Committee and Chairman of the Real Estate Committee.

Donald is a silver life member of the NAACP and a lifetime member of Kappa Alpha Psi.

The Honorable Lashunda Scales was elected in 2018 to serve as the Jefferson County Commissioner for District 1 in Jefferson County, Alabama. Making her tenure the first ever to be occupied by a woman. 

In 2022, Commissioner Scales was overwhelming re-elected for a second term by her constituents. She is a former City Council Member for the City of Birmingham(2009-2018) and an active resident in the metro area for 28 years.

Scales is best known for her public policy advocacy for under-served residents of Jefferson County, building regional alliances to support local governments, advancing equal opportunities for small businesses and women in government. 

Lashunda Scales is an alumna of the prestigious Harvard Kennedy School of Government, 2016 Leadership Birmingham, 2022 Leadership Alabama, Jefferson State Community College and Stillman College (attended). She is a 24-year veteran public relations and marketing professional. She and her husband Michael have been married for 33 years. They have two beautiful daughters and are faithful members of Faith Chapel Christian Center Birmingham, AL.

Commissioner Lashunda Scales serves as Chair of the Public Works, Community Services, Inter-Governmental Relations and NACO/NOBCO Committees; HBCU Liaison; Member of all Jefferson County Commission committees.

Egypt Sherrod is a powerhouse! She is best known as the host and executive producer of HGTV’s hit show “Married To Real Estate” which garnered more than 19 million viewers in it’s first season. Now in its third season, it remains one of the networks top 5 rated shows and can now be viewed in more than 13 countries across the globe. You may also recognize her from hit shows such as “Flipping Virgins” and long running hit, “Property Virgins.”

Since her 20’s Egypt has been building her career as a wealth educator and real estate expert. Currently she is the Founder & CEO of Indigo Road family of companies which includes Indigo Road Realty, a residential real estate brokerage, Indigo Road Design Group and Indigo Road Home Furnishings.

The NAACP Image award & Critics Choice Award nominee also recently had the honor of ringing the bell at the New York Stock Exchange, was honored with a Proclamation declaring August 23rd “Egypt Sherrod Appreciation Day” by the City of Atlanta for her philanthropic contributions, and by the 100 Black Women organization as a real estate trailblazer. She was announced “Global Influencer of the Year” by Inman News.

But before television, there was radio. Egypt’s award-winning broadcast career spanned twenty years and by the age of thirty, she had already been syndicated in more than sixty cities throughout the U.S. Over the years, she scored interviews with Oprah Winfrey, Leonardo DiCaprio, Martin Scorsese, James Brown and Prince, to name just a few. Her honest and electric delivery of sass and class quickly won over millions of listeners, making her a household name.In fall of 2023 Egypt Sherrod announced partnerships with Jeffan International, York Wallpaper, Wallpops.com and Lichtenberg to fully round out her line INDIGO ROAD home furnishings. The mother of three girls Harper 5, Kendall 12, and Simone 23 counts motherhood as her greatest accomplishment. Egypt Sherrod and her husband Mike Jackson have been happily married for 14 years.
