Division Information

 

The Division of Student Affairs provides a comprehensive system of support for students to accomplish the mission of Stillman College. The division is comprised of the Vice President of Student Affairs, the Dean of Student Life, the Director of Housing, the Director of Student Activities, the Director of Student Services, the Director of Career Services, the Director of Athletics, and the Chief of Campus Police. These leaders and their departments contribute to campus vitality by providing academic support, counseling, career planning, health services, student leadership, activities, programming, housing, food service, and safety. In pursuit of educational excellence, the Division of Student Affairs at Stillman College will be recognized locally, regionally, and nationally for model services and programs that enhance personal and professional development.

Job Responsibilities

Job Summary

A campus police officer conducts patrols around the campus, ensuring the security of students, staff, and school buildings. Also known as campus peace officers, campus police officers respond to assistance and emergency requests. The officers enforce or implement institutional rules, laws, and regulations about student conduct defined in the student handbook. They test and adjust on alarm and communication systems and report any malfunctions.

 

Responsibilities

o Enforce institutional rules, regulations, and laws regarding student conduct as defined in the Student Handbook.

o Enforce regulations concerning parking, blocking, or impeding traffic.

o Issue traffic tickets, summons, and arrest warrants. Apprehends, arrests, and files charges on suspects when appropriate.

o Provides emergency services and temporary first aid treatment as required.

o Enforce institutional rules relative to vehicle identification parking permits.

o Enforce rules/regulations relative to unauthorized persons being on Stillman’s Campus property--e.g., denial of admittance to campus property, ejection of persons who refuse to leave upon official request, and enforcement of proper identification (driver's license or student I.D.).

o Assists in any public safety emergency on campus and maintains a working relationship with off-campus public safety agencies.

o Complies, writes, and submits reports on activities.

o Ensures a prompt response and proper disposition of all calls for service.

o Is identified as and serves as "necessary personnel" in the case of a campus/city emergency and therefore is expected to respond to campus emergencies nights, weekends, and holidays.

o Participates in "shift work" scheduling and serves in an on-call capacity where the expected response time is 20 minutes.

o Essential Personnel, for emergency management purposes.

 

Required Skills/Abilities

 

o Skill in the use of first aid procedures.

o Extensive knowledge of statutory provisions relating to the making of arrests and handling of prisoners.

o Considerable knowledge of state and local laws about enforcement activities.

o Considerable knowledge of modern crime prevention and detection techniques.

o Considerable knowledge of investigative techniques.

o Considerable knowledge of emergency medical assistance principles and techniques.

o Considerable knowledge of crowd control tactics.

o Skill in assessing situations and incidents and choosing the most appropriate course of action.

o Skill in oral and written communications.

o Skill in handling firearms.

o Skill in driving motor vehicle.

o Skill in effecting arrests.

o Skill in conducting investigations.

o Must be able to lift 50 lbs.

o Willingness and ability to be an active participant in following applicable safety rules and regulations including necessary training and drills

o Ability to interact respectfully with people from diverse socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds

o Ability to change the planned starting and finishing time of a shift

o Must be able to work eight (8) hour shifts

Conditions of Employment

o Successful candidates must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination, and medical history check.

o Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.

o Possession of a valid driver's license is a requirement for this job.

Education and Experience

o Minimum High School Diploma

o Must be at least 21 years of age, of good character, and be “free from any physical, emotional or mental condition which might adversely affect performance” as a law enforcement officer.

o Alabama Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission (APOSTC) Certified or equivalent.

 

Physical Requirements

 

o Applicants must have the ability to sit, stand, walk, or run for prolonged periods; adequate speech, hearing, visual acuity, and ability to distinguish color; may be required to carry, push, pull, drag, or hold medium to heavyweight objects.

o When performing duties as a peace officer essential and other important duties require maintaining the physical condition necessary for medium to heavy lifting; bending stooping, kneeling, crawling, jumping, and climbing; the use of fingers, both hands, and both arms; the use of both legs; may be required to take offensive and/or defensive action during physical confrontations; ability to discharge a firearm; the ability to operate motorized equipment and/or assigned vehicles.
