Description

Job Summary:

The Director of Bands reports directly to the Vice President of Student Affairs. The primary responsibilities of the Director of Bands is to provide musical and performance expertise to the three main ensembles: The World Class Blue Pride Marching Tigers, the Stillman College Symphonic Band and the 3601 Jazz Band. The marching band competes in Battle of the Bands competitions, participates in local and national parades annually, and performs at home athletic games for basketball and volleyball. The Symphonic and Jazz Bands perform concerts, provide music for campus events, and accompany the Stillman College Choir for special events and bookings. 

 

The Director of Bands is responsible for recruiting students for the Band Program and Stillman College at large, performing administrative duties for the Band Program, and working collaboratively with the Communications department on all public relations efforts for the Band. 

Job Responsibilities

 

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Supervises the Assistant Band Director. 
  • Recruits, interviews, hires, and trains new staff. 
  • Oversees the daily workflow of the department.
  • Provides constructive and timely performance evaluations. 
  • Handles discipline and termination of employees in accordance with company policy. 
  • Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Performs other related duties as assigned. 

 

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Conduct all administrative duties for the Band.
  • Recruit and engage current and future students to become members of the Stillman College Bands.
  • Collaborates with the Academic Success Department to develop a robust academic retention strategy.
  • Organize and maintain the band music library.
  • Coordinates the organization and distribution of uniforms for band students.
  • Manage inventory, repair and provide maintenance of all band instruments and equipment.
  • Schedule and operate a band camp.
  • Create various programs for engagement with the local community and region.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Vice of Student Affairs.
  • Coordinate performances for external band events, rehearse and conduct music ensembles (Marching band, concert band, jazz band, wind ensembles, pep band etc.

Education and Experience:

  • Master’s degree in music, musical art, or related field is required. 
  • Experience working with collegiate bands and directing band programs is required. 
  • An educational background in music education with an understanding of pedagogical methods and instructional strategies is important for teaching and mentoring student musicians. 
  •  

Physical Requirements: 

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
