Division Information

 

The School of Arts and Sciences serves the mission of the College via its central role in providing the instruction and the experiences that define liberal arts education. The school consists of the Department of English, Journalism, and Media Communications, the Department of Natural Sciences, the Department of Psychology, the Department of Religion and Theology, and the Department of Social Sciences. Selected majors are offered in most of the areas. In addition, these units provide the interdisciplinary and introductory courses that make up the general education curriculum.

 

The position of Assistant Professor of Biology is resident in the Department of Natural Sciences. The Department of Natural Sciences offers a challenging curriculum in biology or chemistry or Biomedical Science (Pre-Med). Also, in cooperation with the Department of Education, the Department of Natural Sciences offers courses that prepare graduates to teach science in secondary schools. The department provides classes and support activities that prepare students for standardized tests required for successful program completion and entry into graduate and professional schools. Also, classes are offered in the department for non-majors to complete general physical and life science requirements.

 

Job Summary

The Assistant Professor of Biology is a full-time, 10-month, tenure-track position with a course load not to exceed 30 credits per academic year. The full-time faculty is responsible for the coordination, planning, preparation, presentation, and evaluation of classroom instructions and related activities. The faculty is responsible for performing assigned teaching duties during the day, evening, or occasional weekend on Stillman College campus as well as online platforms. In addition, the faculty is responsible for performing assigned duties during the day, evening, or occasional weekend on Stillman College campus. We expect the potential faculty to develop or continue a research program at Stillman College. At a minimum, the related activities include instruction, academic advising, serving on various committees, participating in professional activities and organizations.

Responsibilities 

  • Prepares and delivers instruction on topics in the General Biology, Human Anatomy & Physiology, and Cell Biology courses.
  • Compiles, administers, evaluates, and grades students' class work, laboratory work, assignments, tests, and papers fairly, consistently, and timely; and keep students informed about their progress through the prompt grading of papers and other work; and notify the Academic Success Center.
  • Develops curricula and instructional material such as syllabi, homework assignments, and handouts.
  • Maintains office hours for students seeking academic advice, assists in student recruitment and retention; and assists students with course-related problems outside of the classroom.
  • Maintains accurate student attendance records, grades, and other required records in compliance with federal FERPA regulations.
  • Attends all faculty meetings, college assemblies, professional development and orientation activities, and other meetings as called by the President, Dean or Department Chair.
  • Participates in departmental and college committees; and provides outreach service to the community.
  • May perform other duties as assign by the Department Chair or the School Dean.
  • Keeps abreast of developments in the field by reading current literature, communicating with colleagues, and participating in professional conferences.
  • Write research proposals to obtain grants for basic research in biomedical science.

Education and Experience

  • Candidates must hold a PhD from an accredited institution with a major in Biology, Biomedical Sciences, Cell Biology, Human Physiology, or related field.
  • May consider candidates who hold a master’s degree from an accredited institution with 18 hours of graduate-level coursework in the biological sciences with nine hours of graduate coursework in human anatomy & physiology or hold a master’s degree from an accredited institution with a major in biology or related subfield and hold HAPS certification.
  • Candidates with professional degrees (M.S.N., M.D., D.O., D.C. or D.V.M.) must hold HAPS certification. Demonstrated excellence in lecture and laboratory teaching at the undergraduate college level is preferred.

Physical Requirements 

  • Climbing two flights of stairs to classes and faculty offices. 
  • Cleaning and maintenance of laboratory equipment after each lab session.
