Description

Assistant Professor or Associate Professor of African American History and Culture

 

The Department of Social Sciences at Stillman College invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor of History, to begin as soon as filled.  A Historically Black College located in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, Stillman has the proud tradition of readying student-leaders to engage their communities, the nation, and the world.

 

Experience and required qualifications:

  • Ph.D. preferred, but not required, in History, Race and Gender Studies, American Studies, or a related field.
  • Evidence of successful college/university traditional and online instruction.
  • Evidence of successful research development (conference presentations, publications, professional/organizational membership(s), etc.) relevant to the field.

 

Responsibilities of the successful applicant include the following:

  • Teach survey and upper-level course in history and/or the applicant’s area of specialty.
  • Assist in the development of an interdisciplinary program with a focus on Social Justice.
  • Participate in the planning of a Civil Rights Museum on campus, with an emphasis on Stillman’s notable history in the struggle for equality.
  • Advise and mentor majors in the department.  
  • Incorporate active student learning and appropriate technology-use in the classroom.
  • Engage in service activities relevant to the applicant’s field of study as well as to the mission of the department, the division, and the college.
  • Engage in professional development activities (grant writing, conference presentations, workshops, etc.) contributive to the field and the college.
