Description

Stillman College, West Alabama's only four-year HBCU, seeks an experienced, mission-driven  professional to serve as a Campus Police Officer. The Campus Police Officer plays an essential  role in supporting the College's mission by helping maintain a safe, secure, and welcoming  environment for students, faculty, staff, visitors, and the broader Stillman College community. 

Under the direction of the Chief of Campus Police, the Campus Police Officer promotes and  maintains campus safety and security; enforces applicable laws, regulations, and College  policies; conducts investigations; responds to emergency and security calls; patrols assigned  areas; prepares detailed reports; and provides professional assistance to members of the College  community. 

The Campus Police Officer is responsible for crime prevention and control, traffic and parking  enforcement, emergency response, public safety, building security, event security, and other  related campus safety services. The officer is expected to establish and maintain positive  working relationships with students, employees, visitors, local law enforcement agencies, and  members of the surrounding community. 

The position requires a strong commitment to professionalism, integrity, confidentiality, sound  judgment, and service to the Stillman College community. The selected candidate must be  available to work assigned shifts, including day, evening, overnight, weekend, holiday, athletic  event, and special event assignments, based on the operational needs of the College. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

Essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 

1. Provide foot and vehicular patrol of the Stillman College campus, including buildings,  grounds, parking areas, and other assigned locations. 

2. Conduct scheduled tours and security checks of buildings and grounds to ensure the  safety and security of persons and property. 

3. Respond to and investigate incidents occurring on campus, including criminal offenses,  traffic accidents, safety concerns, and violations of College policies. 

4. Assist with misdemeanor and felony investigations, including interviewing victims,  witnesses, suspects, and other involved individuals.

5. Prepare detailed case files, incident reports, and other required law enforcement  documentation. 

6. Provide security assistance and escorts to students, faculty, staff, and visitors when  appropriate. 

7. Enforce applicable criminal and traffic laws and College policies within the officer's  authorized jurisdiction. 

8. Take appropriate law enforcement action, including arrests, citations, or summonses,  when authorized by law and applicable College procedures. 

9. Keep the Chief of Campus Police and appropriate College administrators informed of  significant matters involving campus safety and security. 

10. Secure College buildings and facilities. 

11. Issue citations for parking violations and assist with enforcement of College parking  regulations. 

12. Complete clear, concise, accurate, and timely incident reports following reported  incidents. 

13. Maintain required daily activity logs and other departmental records. 14. Inspect campus areas for safety and security hazards and report concerns to the  appropriate department. 

15. Investigate and respond to adverse campus conditions and situations. 16. Monitor College events to promote the safety and security of students, employees,  participants, and visitors. 

17. Lock and unlock offices and buildings as authorized and conduct after-hours security  checks. 

18. Assist with campus emergency notifications and emergency response procedures. 19. Provide assistance and escorts to campus visitors as directed. 

20. Detect and report hazardous conditions, including lighting outages, obstructions, property  damage, roadway concerns, and other safety hazards. 

21. Complete required continuing education and professional law enforcement training. 22. Maintain all required certifications and qualifications applicable to the position. 23. Maintain firearms qualification and other required law enforcement certifications in  accordance with applicable requirements. 

24. Maintain availability to work assigned day, evening, overnight, weekend, holiday, and  special event shifts. 

25. Maintain lost-and-found property in accordance with College procedures. 26. Appear in court and provide testimony as required. 

27. Participate in emergency preparedness training, drills, and exercises. 28. Monitor campus security cameras and report suspicious or unusual activity. 29. Provide security for athletic competitions, College events, programs, and activities. 30. Assist with training College personnel regarding safety, security, emergency response,  and related matters. 

31. Assist with the development and implementation of campus security and emergency  response procedures. 

32. Perform other duties as assigned by the Chief of Campus Police.

The Campus Police Officer is expected to: 

• Adhere to all Stillman College policies, procedures, rules, and applicable laws. • Maintain confidentiality concerning sensitive student, employee, College, and law  enforcement information. 

• Maintain professional knowledge and skills through continuing education and  professional development. 

• Interact with diverse student and employee populations in a courteous, respectful, and  professional manner. 

• Maintain appropriate work hours consistent with the assigned schedule and College  requirements. 

• Represent Stillman College in a positive and professional manner. 

• Demonstrate appropriate physical fitness and agility necessary to perform the essential  functions of the position. 

• Participate in College committees, training activities, and community initiatives when  assigned. 

• Assist with campus safety, emergency preparedness, and security planning. • Promote a safe and welcoming environment consistent with the mission and values of  Stillman College. 

Officers may be assigned to different shifts based on departmental staffing and the operational  needs of the College. 

Minimum Qualifications 

• High school diploma or GED required. 

• Minimum of two years of law enforcement experience preferred or required based on the  position classification. 

• Valid Alabama Peace Officers' Standards and Training Commission (APOSTC)  certification, or other applicable law enforcement certification recognized by the State of  Alabama. 

• Valid driver's license. 

• Must be insurable under the College's applicable vehicle insurance requirements. • Ability to successfully complete required criminal background screening. • Ability to obtain and maintain CPR and First Aid certification. 

• Ability to maintain all required law enforcement certifications and qualifications. • Ability to work assigned shifts, including evenings, overnight hours, weekends, holidays,  and special events. 

Preferred Qualifications 

• Associate degree or higher from an accredited institution. 

• Prior campus police, higher education, or university law enforcement experience.

• Experience in crime prevention, investigations, emergency response, or community  policing. 

• Experience working with college students and diverse populations. 

• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

• Ability to respond appropriately to changing campus safety and security conditions. 

Background and Employment Requirements 

Employment is contingent upon successful completion of all required Human Resources  employment processes, including applicable criminal background checks, employment  verification, credential verification, driver's license verification, and any other screening required  by Stillman College or applicable law. 

The selected candidate must satisfy all applicable requirements for employment as a Campus  Police Officer and maintain required certifications throughout employment.
