Keynote Speaker Earvin "Magic" Johnson

Earvin “Magic” Johnson is widely regarded as one of the most transformative figures in the history of sport, business, and philanthropy. A global icon whose influence extends far beyond basketball, Johnson has built a legacy defined by excellence, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to community empowerment.

Rising to national prominence at Michigan State University, Johnson led the Spartans to the 1979 NCAA Championship in one of the most celebrated title games in collegiate basketball history. He entered the NBA as the first overall pick in 1979 and spent his entire professional career with the Los Angeles Lakers, where he revolutionized the point guard position with his size, vision, and unmatched playmaking ability.

Over the course of his illustrious 13-year career, Johnson earned five NBA championships, three NBA Most Valuable Player Awards, and three NBA Finals MVP honors. A 12-time All-Star and nine-time All-NBA First Team selection, he redefined the game with his versatility and leadership, becoming one of the most celebrated athletes of all time.

Beyond his achievements on the court, Johnson has distinguished himself as a pioneering entrepreneur and influential business leader. Through Magic Johnson Enterprises, he has built a diverse portfolio spanning real estate development, sports ownership, and entertainment, with a focus on investing in underserved communities and creating pathways for economic growth.

A dedicated philanthropist, Johnson founded the Magic Johnson Foundation, which has provided scholarships, expanded access to technology, and supported critical health and educational initiatives nationwide. His advocacy and transparency following his HIV diagnosis in 1991 transformed public awareness and helped reshape conversations around health, stigma, and prevention.

Johnson’s contributions to society have been recognized with numerous honors, including honorary degrees from several institutions and induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. His enduring impact reflects a life committed not only to achievement, but to uplifting others and creating lasting change.

As Stillman College celebrates its Sesquicentennial—150 years of academic excellence and transformative impact—Mr. Johnson’s presence as the 2026 Commencement Speaker represents a powerful alignment of legacy, leadership, and purpose. His journey embodies the values of resilience, service, and visionary leadership that define the Stillman experience and inspire the Class of 2026.
