Stillman College is an approved Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) site for the 2022 tax year, a designation that will provide free tax preparation services and tax counseling for low-to-moderate-income individuals and families in the Tuscaloosa area.
Stillman students and a handful of faculty members have been trained on IRS software and will staff Stillman’s VITA site this spring. Stillman’s VITA site is currently accepting appointments for consultation and tax preparation.
Both the VITA and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) programs are Internal Revenue Service initiatives funded by congress. VITA and TCE are operated by volunteers in several thousand communities throughout the country. People who make $58,000 or less annually or have a disability are eligible for the VITA program.
Trained volunteers will prepare your taxes at no cost and will make sure you receive all the tax credits you are eligible for, including the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and the Child Tax Credit (CTC).
These IRS-certified volunteers can also answer any questions you have about building savings and protecting your finances. Many locations will also offer you the opportunity to open a savings account and have your tax return deposited directly to your bank account.
