The Division of Student Affairs provides a comprehensive system of support for students to accomplish the mission of Stillman College. The division is comprised of the Vice President of Student Affairs, the Dean of Student Life, the Director of Housing, the Director of Student Activities, the Director of Student Services, the Director of Career Services, the Director of Athletics, and the Chief of Campus Police. These leaders and their departments contribute to campus vitality by providing academic supports, counseling, career planning, health services, student leadership, activities, programming, housing, food service, and safety. Job Summary

Reporting to the Deputy Chief, the Police Sergeant serves as the first-line supervisor for their assigned shift within the Stillman Police Department (SPD). This position supervises the patrol division and is responsible for providing protection of persons and property on campus by utilizing police skills and patrolling techniques to maintain a safe environment. The Sergeant provides security and protection to the college community, by patrolling areas or buildings to enforce laws and rules, to include providing on-site supervision over officers during emergency and routine situations during a shift. This position manages the preparation of daily assignments and the weekly duty roster, based upon observation and assessment of individual officer skills/performance levels, relative to scheduled protective services activities or special requests.


o Provide faculty, staff and students highly efficient and professional protection and service by being present and interacting with the campus community - Oversees the day-to-day activities of the college’s community law enforcement services.

o Works with the Deputy Chief for appropriate scheduling of officers to ensure adequate shift coverage, vacation relief, and call-off replacement. May coordinate and schedule additional security at various special activities and events on campus, as needed.

o Partners with the Deputy Chief to plan and execute shift meetings, roll call, to ensure overall information is shared with assigned shifts.

o Participates in reviewing and updating SPD's policies and procedures. Provides subject matter expertise to ensure they are accurate and enforceable - Assists in the evaluation and recommendation of new equipment, supplies or special materials to improve security enforcement.

o Conducts Performance Management evaluations of officers for their assigned shift and assists the Deputy Chief in determining future staffing needs.

o Monitors and ensures staff compliance with departmental policies, procedures, and applicable regulatory requirements.

o Promotes Community Policing within the campus community; develops and maintains internal and external relationships with campus stakeholders, including various departments, student organizations, community groups, and local businesses.

o Coordinates with other departments regarding program research; communicates the impact of new programs and/or new policies or procedures on individual departments and campus users.

o Reviews all necessary administrative forms/reports related to Public Safety incidents and operations approve reports written and submitted by officers, and assists Security Officers, as needed.

o Ensures reports are completed accurately and timely.

o Liaises with law enforcement staff regarding crime prevention measures - Attends and participates in various meetings pertaining to Community Policing.

o Attends and participates in various meetings pertaining to Community Policing operations and services.

o Provides the Deputy Chief with a daily summary of Community Safety incidents and activities. Analyze data regarding security activities to determine patterns and effectiveness of security activities.

o Perform the requisite duties of Campus Police Officer as needed, and may be required to work weekends, holidays and/or different shifts than regularly assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities

o Skill in the use of first aid procedures.

o Extensive knowledge of statutory provisions relating to the making of arrests and handling prisoners.

o Considerable knowledge of state and local laws pertaining to enforcement activities.

o Considerable knowledge of modern crime prevention and detection techniques.

o Considerable knowledge of emergency medical assistance principles and techniques.

o Must be able to work eight (8) hour shifts

Conditions of Employment

o Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.

o Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.

o Possession of a valid driver's license is a requirement for this job.

o Serve as Campus Security Authority as outlined by the Clery Act.

Education and Experience

o Minimum High School Diploma; Bachelor’s Degree Preferred

o Must be at least 21 years of age, of good character and be “free from any physical, emotional or mental condition which might adversely affect performance” as a law enforcement officer.

o Alabama Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission (APOSTC) Certified or equivalent.

o Must meet the minimum requirements of a law enforcement officer in the State of Alabama either through current good standing, reciprocity, or reactivation of their law enforcement certification and attend state-mandated training within six months of hire.

o Three years’ experience in an administrative command level position in law enforcement or in a military settings,

Physical Requirements

o Applicants must have the ability to sit, stand, walk or run for prolonged periods of time; adequate speech, hearing, visual acuity, and ability to distinguish color; may be required

to carry, push, pull, drag or hold medium to heavyweight objects.

o When performing duties as a peace officer essential and other important duties require maintaining physical condition necessary for medium to heavy lifting; bending stooping, kneeling, crawling, jumping, and climbing; the use of fingers, both hands, and both arms; the use of both legs; may be required to take offensive and/or defensive action during physical confrontations; ability to discharge a firearm; the ability to operate motorized equipment and/or assigned vehicles.
