Our mission is to train and develop educators who are professional, competent, content knowledgeable, technologically proficient, and innovative teachers.

 

Stillman College’s Department of Kinesiology:

Stillman College, School of Education, invites applications for the Department Chair of Kinesiology to begin August 2022 or earlier, based on availability. The department chair position is a full-time, 12-month, tenure-track position with a usual course load of four courses per academic year.

The Department of Kinesiology offers two programs majoring in Human Performance (Non-Teacher Certification) and majoring in Physical Education (Teacher Certification). The Department also offers minors in Human Performance. Any non-Human Performance student desiring to minor in Human Performance may do so by completing the required courses.

The discipline of Kinesiology is dedicated to the study of human movement and physical activity that impact on health, society and quality of life. The department teaches the scientific basis of physical activity, and the skills and the physical fitness competencies inherent in the profession that are required to be successful in the public and private schools, municipal or private settings and/or graduate school.

Emphasis is placed upon:

● Knowledge of content, disciplinary concepts, and the tools of inquiry related to the development of a physically educated person

● Demonstrate understanding of how individuals differ in their approaches to learning and create appropriate instruction adapted to these differences

● Demonstrate knowledge of how individuals develop and can provide opportunities that support their physical, cognitive, social and emotional development

● Describe and demonstrate effective communication skills. The pursuit of these goals and objectives contributes to the realization of the general mission and goals of Stillman College.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

Terminal degree appropriate for the discipline or have the equivalent in training and experience. This refers to the highest degree awarded in a discipline. The doctorate is the terminal degree for most disciplines represented at Stillman College. 

We seek an individual who has demonstrates the following: 

  • academic administrative experience,
  • strengths in educating undergraduates, including online learning.
  • excellence in scholarship and research as evidenced by a strong record of peer-reviewed publications,
  • a commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity and inclusion, and
  • excellent written and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with diverse audiences.

The successful candidate must have an earned doctorate in kinesiology, including exercise science, physical education, or closely related field with an academic background and appropriate credentials to be a tenured professor in an academic department in the School of Education at Stillman College. The department chair’s key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • communicating and implementing college and university policies to the department, and advocating for departmental needs to the college and university,
  • encouraging and supporting good teaching, scholarly activity, and professional development within the department,
  • Working with Dean and fellow faculty members on CAEP Preparation and Standards
  • Exhibits strong leadership skills for department faculty members
  • planning and executing a strategic direction for the department, building and staffing the schedule of classes, fostering team building, managing the department and its staff, working with diverse faculty and students in the department and across campus to enhance interdisciplinary collaboration, and fostering and maintaining collaborative relationships with external entities,
  • working with the faculty to develop and review standards, curricula, and procedures, which provide adequate preparation of graduates for professional or further academic endeavor, and
  • leading student recruitment and retention efforts and ensuring department majors are appropriately advised.
