Description

  The Relief Hall Director plays a crucial role in supporting the management and operations of a university or college residence hall. This position is responsible for ensuring the well-being and safety of residents, fostering a positive living and learning environment, and assisting with various administrative tasks. The Relief Hall Director acts as a temporary substitute for the regular Hall Director during their absence or as needed.

Job Responsibilities

 

  • Student Support: Provide support and guidance to residents, addressing personal, academic, and interpersonal concerns. Collaborate with campus resources to connect students with relevant support services.
  • Emergency Response:  Respond promptly to emergencies with the residence hall, coordinating with campus police and other relevant personnel.
  • Policy Enforcement:  Uphold and enforce residence hall policies, ensuring a safe and respectful living environment. Address violations and conduct necessary follow-up procedures.
  • Crisis Response: Respond to emergencies and crisis situations within the residential community. Serve as a point of contact for residents during emergencies and collaborate with campus security and other relevant departments.
  • Collaboration: Work collaboratively with other Residence Life Staff, campus departments, and student organizations to enhance the overall residential experience and address broader campus needs.
  • Conflict Resolution:   Mediate and resolve conflicts among residents, fostering a positive and inclusive living environment. Implement restorative justice practices when appropriate.
  • Programming and Education: Develop and implement educational programs that align with the College’s goals and contribute to the holistic development of residents.
  • Professional Development:    Stay informed about best practices in residence life, attend relevant conferences, and engage in ongoing professional development to enhance skills and knowledge.
  • Safety and Security:   Collaborate with campus police and other relevant departments to ensure the safety and security of residents. Enforce and communicate residence hall policies and 

procedures.

  • On-Call ResponsibilityRelief Hall Director may be part of an on-call rotation, where they are available to respond to emergencies or urgent situations outside regular working hours such as Move-In day, Holidays, and Move-out.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

 

  • Develop relationships with residents. 
  • Assists the Hall Director in the operation of the assigned hall and maintains the front desk area as well as the lobby.
  • Oversee the development of programming that fosters awareness of the eight dimensions of student wellness. 
  • Assist to promote an environment conductive to educational growth of its residents.
  • Attend staff meetings with the Assistant Director of Residential Life.
  • Serves as a source of information for visitors to the hall.
  • Ensure visitors has a hall escort before they leave the desk and enter residential portions of the halls.
  • Develop a sense of community among staff through staff development, leadership development, and personal/professional development.
  • Locate residents by telephone (or other hall communications system) when requested to do so by College’s officials.
  • Oversee the administrative functions of the hall office operation, including Community Assistants, timesheets, supplies, keys, etc.
  • Read Shift log and communicate with relieving staff member.
  • Maintain a shift log of all activities during time worked.
  • Utilize the work order system to ensure that maintenance problems are reported and corrected as soon as possible.
  • Promote and uphold a secure environment within the residence hall.
  • Enforce College and departmental policies and regulations.

 

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: High school diploma or equivalent with more than two (2) years’ experience. Preferred bachelor’s degree from an accredited higher education institution by the date of hire and 6 years’ directly related residence life work experience. Strong interpersonal and communication skills and an ability to work collaboratively with students, staff, and other campus administration.
